International Film Editors Forum (IFEF) 2026
The 9th edition of the IFEF will be held in-person on the 17th of October 2026 in Cologne, from 11:30 to 16:30, with a lunch included from 13:00 to 14:00.
© Juliane Guder / EdimotionThe IFEF is a five-hour networking event aimed at film editors who are actively involved in advancing their profession and its working conditions in their respective countries. Participants are given the opportunity to exchange their experiences, and together develop solutions that address the various challenges facing the profession all over the world. Adapted elements of the workshop format „world café“ are used. The facilitator is Christine von Fragstein.
The main topic this year mirrors that of the International Panel:
Ethical Editing in the Age of AI
Unlike the panel, the IFEF is (as always!), a participatory event, not one where you can just lean back and listen. Participants will share experiences about currently known ethical issues in working with machine learning tools, and try to anticipate future ethical challenges. They will work together to develop the building blocks for a Code of Ethics that could support film editors worldwide in sensitive situations relating to AI.
You do not need to be an AI expert to take part, nor do you need experience using machine learning tools in your own editing. But of course it is a bonus if you have already given a bit of thought to ethical issues involving film editing in the age of AI.
In previous years, the IFEF has attracted film editors from over 30 different countries to Cologne, including travellers from as far away as Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Gambia, India, Iran, Kenya, Mexico, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and the USA. To quote Job ter Burg, who has taken part several times: „Participants from across the globe have found the IFEF an experience with a long-lasting effect, with attendees going back home energized and inspired, having broadened both their networks and their horizons.“
Note: Participation is only possible with prior registration and limited to a maximum of four people per country. Please register no later than 12 October 2026 by using the registration form. We request a participation fee of 20 Euros to cover the lunch and tea time catering. To save time on the day, you can pay online.
